Retief Burger is not an artist, even though his music is incredible. He just does not have the desire to go to stages all over South Africa and perform… at all.
He just wants to serve his church for now. His church is called Kruispunt, and is a student
ministry he pioneered with a few friends a few years ago on the Potchefstroom university campus. As someone with a talent for leadership, he is a person who sees a need, and fulfils
it the best way he knows how. When he studied theology at PUK a few years ago, he saw the need for a revolutionary new "church" that would be relevant to the needs of the young
people on campus. Then when the church took off, they realised that using the same old music to worship on, just did not cut it, so they revamped the old songs. Retief had been
writing music for quite a few years already, so he started writing his own worship songs for the church as well.
Louis Brittz (who had been following his path closely for years) heard it and insisted on
recording it. The songs just had to get out to the SA church as a whole. After some nagging and convincing Retief gave in, and they recorded Luidkeels in 2005. Retief did it on the
premise that they did not market it in any way, and that his face would not feature on the album either. If God wanted the songs to get out, then He had to make that happen
naturally. Well everyone who heard it, told everyone around them. Word of mouth spread like wild fire, and the album became one of the best sellers in 2005/6. Still Retief did not
lose focus. Even though he did not give any contact details on the album, people obviously started inviting him to come and minister at their churches. But it took quite a few years
before he felt released leave his full time ministry at his home church.
Then in May 2007, Luidkeels Hersien was recorded. This time they had a budget to do something spectacular. Now even though Retief does not want any kind of "fame", he does
believe in excellence in the fullest sense of the word. They got in the best of the best to record the DVD. On the night of the recording they had a HUGE cross in the centre of the
round stage, and the whole band played inwards towards the cross, so that there would be no confusion where the focus was. They wanted everyone to focus on the cross, and what
Jesus had done for us.
Retief Burger has now started going out to minister to the rest of South Africa, and if he could leave one message with South Africa through his music it would be this; "Give your life
to something bigger than yourself. Let us live to the glory of God and tell Him that there is nothing that means more to us than He does. Tell God that you love Him, and realise that He loves you more than anything. You are His Bride."
